A place of history
Charlemagne
Charlemagne was the first occidental emperor of the Middle Ages. He expanded the borders of his empire in numerous campaigns. His court became the intellectual center. Many influences and traditions go back to this time.
World heritage
The Carolingian Church of St. Mary was built on the remains of a Roman thermal complex. In form and size it surpassed all churches built north of the Alps until then. The west building and the octagon in the center have been preserved until today.
Imperial Throne
The imperial throne looks less impressive than you might expect considering its historical significance. While it is often said to be the throne of Charlemagne himself, this cannot be unequivocally verified.
